Shocking: Gunmen, herdsmen kill travellers along the Lagos-benin expressway.



Numerous persons were allegedly killed yesterday and two persons were abducted after gunmen assumed to be herdsmen laid ambush on passengers along “Ore-Benin” Road, Ondo State. A number of others were seriously wounded.
According to those who survived the attack, it happened around 4p.m. when buses either coming from Benin and heading to Lagos or coming from Lagos and heading to Benin or Akure were attacked.
A lady, who escaped the attack, narrated the whole story; stating that the gunmen kept shooting at the vehicles which made passengers to run. Most passengers were gunned down while trying to escape. She said she was on her way back to school when they ran into the gunmen presumed to be herdsmen.
The young lady said: “I’m schooling at Igbinedion University, Okada. I had intended to return to Lagos on Sunday but when my friend told me her parents were coming to pick her, I decided to go with them.
“We left on time. We arrived Ore about 2:30p.m. As soon as we approached a village after Ore, we saw three commercial buses parked on the road amongst the buses were two cars. We all thought it was traffic.”
She said: “Before we knew what was happening, they started shooting those who tried to escape into the bush and a lot of people were killed in the process, even the residents also ran for safety."
An additional passenger who escaped the attack also said the armed men used one of the buses hijacked to close the road and raided passengers.
The man also said that one of the vehicles upon approaching the gunmen entered inside a trench which left the passengers severely injured.The man said that many of the passengers quickly made their way into the bush whilst two 18-seater buses, were robbed.

For half an hour, it was reported that vehicles did not pass on the main way connecting the states as policemen who were at various barricades on the road ran for cover. He said the circumstances was only regulated after the military men moved in to extricate the gunmen.
